Personal Commissions

Painting private commissions has become a large part of my work in the last few years. I find the process very satisfying. Anything from a personalised wedding or birthday present to larger corporate projects that includes hotels or global corporation head offices.

The first step is to talk to the client to absorb and tune in to them and their requirements. If the commission is for example, a wedding present, I will ask about the couple and where they are from, their interests, where they are getting married or what their favourite colours are. I will then begin immersing myself in the painting with them ‘at my shoulder’ in the studio.

Wedding or other special occasion presents are always received with huge appreciation and the client feels that they have presented something thoughtful and lasting.
In many cases a few people get together to share the gift.

In some instances I may be asked to do what I call is a ‘blind’ commission. This is when the client lets me interpret and decide what their painting will be. The painting is usually for themselves so we simply chat and talk.

From this I will get a sense of the things that mean something to them. Many of the things we discussed will often be subtly introduced and referred to in the final painting.

This is what really makes the painting something very personal and unique. The final reveal is always intriguing but in every instance has been a thrilling and rewarding moment for both the client and me!
